	MOTHERBOARDS The motherboard that you choose is the core of the computer system. It makes and sets ALL of the boundarys or limits to all of the other components that you will or can use. We feel that the best way to avoid hardware conflicts is to START with the Motherboard and CPU(Processor) then build it from there up (with a Barebone Kit or motherboard & CPU combo that has them matched). If you already have some components, (hard drive, video , sound,,, pci cards, cd or dvd burner,case, fans,,,) you will need to check some of the things below to avoid problems later. If you are replacing your motherboard you will want to check ALL of the specifications on your choice of replacement motherboards. Good Luck on your computer endeavors! ----- Motherboard Specifications Explained ----- (Hz. or Hertz is a unit of frequency of one cycle per second. 1KHz means 1000 cycles per second, 1MHz is 1,000,000 and 1GHz is 1,000,000,000 cycles per second. It is mostly used to describe speed.) Form Factor = AT, ATX, MicroATX, FlexATX, and more. You will need to know this to make sure that your motherboard will fit into your computer case, and that your power supply will connect to your motherboard, computer case, and its buttons,,, properly. Processor or CPU, Interface = Socket ; A, 370, 478, 754, 775, Sempron, Athlon 64,,, (If you already have a Processor or CPU, you MUST check this it is important! This is the type of "socket" that your motherboard has, to plug the CPU into.) Processors Supported = (examples) Intel Celeron up to 2.0GHz Intel Pentium 4 up to 3.06GHz, or AMD Athlon XP up to 3000+ @ 333MHz FSB AMD Athlon XP up to 3200+ @ 400 MHz FSB, or AMD Duron up to 1.3GHz AMD Duron up to 1.8GHz (If you already have a Processor or CPU, you MUST check this it is important!) Additional Technologies = Hyper-Threading Technology, or HyperTransport Technology, Front Side Bus (FSB) = 100MHz, 400MHz, 533MHz , 800MHz, 1600MHz, 2000MHz , and more, Some but not all can be backwards compatible. (If you already have a Processor or CPU, you MUST check this it is important!) This is the max. bus speed that data can "move" with matched components. (66Mhz, to 2000Mhz+,,,) Not matching these when you build your computer can cause; it to not work at all, your board or chip (CPU) to be damaged or burnt, or one component can reduce the performance and benefits of others. An 800MHz FSB board with a 400MHz FSB CPU (if it works) may not utilize the speed of the board, or an 800MHz FSB CPU with a 400MHz FSB board (if it works) may not utilize the speed of the CPU. To me this is wasted money and potential speed. Don't forget to check for; Hyper-Threading Technology, or HyperTransport Technology, they make a BIG difference in real speed. Chipset = Northbridge (and or )Southbridge, can be; VIA , nVIDIA, Intel, and others. This is who makes the motherboards Chipset, in case you ever need to update it. Memory, or RAM = Number of Slots 2, 3, 4,,, This is how many modules or "sticks" the board can use. Number of Pins (in each slot) 168-, 184-, 240-,,, Pin Maximum Memory Supported (counting all slots) 1, 2, 3, 4GB ,,, Memory Supported (what type of RAM) MB= Size, Mhz= Speed, PC100, PC133,SDRAM memory PC1600, PC2100,,, non-ECC, unbuffered DDR SDRAM ,PC3200/PC2700// non-ECC DDR buffered DDR SDRAM,,,, Some but not all can be backwards compatible. (If you already have your RAM [memory], you MUST check this it is important!) Don't forget to check for Dual channel RAM, and the proper slots on the board that will enable it. Some boards say, with 3 or 4 slots, using 1 and 3(for example) will enable the Dual channel feature, but using 1 and 2, or 2 and 4, will not. Audio = Channels 2,4,5.1, 6.1, 7.1,,, Channels Audio Chipset AC '97 CODEC (If you already have a sound card, this it is not as important! But it is if you have your Speakers.) AGP = Speed 2X, 4X, 8X, Voltage 1.5 Volt (If you already have a video card, the AGP speed and Voltage is important! Some have onboard video)Some but not all can be backwards compatible. Supported Devices = This is how many you can connect directly to your motherboard. 1, 2, 4 ,,, Hard Drive Types = IDE = ATA, ATA/66, 100, 133, Ultra ATA-133,,, Serial ATA = SATA-150, SCSI = 80 Pin Ultra 160,,, RAID modes - Tells you about your RAID options. PIO Modes Mode 0, Mode 1, Mode 2, Mode 3, Mode 4, Mode 5 USB = USB Version 1.1 or 2.0 USB Data Transfer Rates 12Mbps 1.1 480Mbps 2.0 FireWire = Data Transfer Rates,,, Expansion Slots = This is how many cards you can plug into it and what kind; Video, sound, modem, Lan, video capture,,, AGP Slots = 1 PCI Slots = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,,, ISA Slots = 1, 2, 3, I/O Ports = PS/2 Keyboard Connectors PS/2 Mouse Connectors Serial Communication Ports Parallel Ports USB Ports FireWire Ports Audio Out Jacks:1, 2, digital,,, Line In Jacks Microphone Jacks IDE Headers FDD Headers IrDA Connectors Dimensions = Length 11.895 in.
